St. Bridget (Postville, Iowa)

Dublin Core

Title

St. Bridget (Postville, Iowa)

Description

"The French and Irish settlers who arrived in that part of the county before 1870 were visited by priests from Prairie du Chien who crossed the Mississippi into Iowa and used the military road. In the late 1860s the Catholic pioneers in Postville organized the Catholic Society under the supervision of Father Charles Toner. A few years later, in 1872, they built a frame church (36 by 70 feet) at a cost of $2,500 and dedicated it to Saint Bridget."
